International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, fourth edition (ICD-O-4) final tables now available

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has published the new fourth edition of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O-4) tables on the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours Online website.

ICD-O-4 features a new morphology structure and five-digit morphology codes based on the fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours series. Alongside the updated morphology and topography lists, listings of changes between ICD-O-3.2 and ICD-O-4 are provided as reference material for cancer registries worldwide.

The tables, listed below, are available online or as downloadable Excel tables.

Changes to morphology codes and terms between ICD-O-3.2 and ICD-O-4:

• New morphology codes (4 digits) – these codes are new to ICD-O-4 (not present in ICD-O-3.2)
• New morphology codes (5 digits) – first 4 digits present in ICD-O-3.2 and 5th digit different from 0
• Morphology code changes – changes in the first 4 digits
• Deleted morphology codes – present in ICD-O-3.2 but not in ICD-O-4
• Behaviour code changes
• New morphology terms
• Morphology term changes
